Kite Workshops introduction

Kites can help to bring people together and can be the channel for learning and communication between different ages and different cultures. We can supply kite making workshops in schools, youth groups, community groups, with older people, and in Family Learning Projects. A typical kitemaking workshop will lasts one to two hours resulting in everyone in the group making a simple kite. Whole day or half day  sessions can be arranged involving more complicated construction work. 

Sessions can be targeted to suit a variety of ages and abilities.

Kite workshops in schools – primary:

Infinite Kites can provide kite-making workshops as follows:

  • Kite Artist to lead 1-2 hour kite making sessions with one class ( approx 30 pupils)
  • Kite artist to lead full day whole school Kite Day  
  • Kite artist to lead training for teachers. Training the trainers.

Typical kitemaking workshop plan

The total time for a kite-making workshop will depend on a number of variables including the age and abilities of the children, the type of kite being made. The example shown here making a diamond kite with year 4 pupils would last about 2 hours.

  • Brief introduction to kites and kite making – 15 mins
  • Kite making 45 mins
  • Decorative work on kite sail 15 mins
  • Discussion on safety 15 mins
  • Flying out of doors - testing flying mending –  35 mins

Plan for a Whole school Kite Day:

  • Kite artist to attend staff meeting / lead twilight session with teachers/group leaders in advance to set up the project and train all staff involved.
  • Kite artist to lead introduction to kites – eg at assembly
  • Kite making carried out in class led by teachers (with parent volunteers) following the training provided for teachers as above.
  • On Kite Day, everyone gathers in the hall for an introduction and a demonstration, perhaps to watch short video before getting started on making their own kites. At the end of the day hopefully everyone will have made a kite and can all fly together and see what everyone else has made.
